How Do I Safely Introduce New Fish To My Pond?

Be cautious when introducing new koi to your pond. It’s essential to refrain from adding new koi if you suspect that any of your existing koi may be suffering from an infection or parasites. Ideally, you should quarantine the new koi for at least 30 days before introducing them to your main pond. During this period, keep them in a large container or a separate pond that is far enough away from your primary pond to prevent water splashing between the two. Always ensure that the quarantine container or pond has adequate oxygen supply, which can be achieved with a simple air pump and air stone. Additionally, it’s important to have some form of filtration in the quarantine container or pond to keep it clean and safe for the koi.

Always proceed slowly with the acclimation process to help the koi adapt to the cold water and the overall environment of your pond. This method is known as aqua mating, which involves placing the bag containing the newly acquired koi on the surface of your pond water for approximately 20 to 25 minutes This approach minimizes the stress the koi experience and allows them to gradually acclimatise to any differences in water temperature, ensuring they remain healthy and preventing their immune systems from becoming compromised.

Even after introducing new koi into your pond, it’s essential to monitor them closely. It’s important to observe their behaviour to ensure they are acclimating properly. If you notice any signs that might indicate an infection or a parasite, you can quickly address the issue by following the guidelines we’ve provided. Below, we have included a link to an excellent notebook that we sell, which we highly recommend. This notebook will help you manage various koi health problems and would be a valuable resource for any koi enthusiast.
