What Does Menware Mean?

Menware, pronounced as MEHN wah reh, is a distinctive and visually striking feature observed on the heads of koi fish, particularly associated with the renowned Showa head pattern. This exquisite design consists of a prominent black area that effectively separates vibrant, bright red markings, capturing the attention of koi enthusiasts and collectors alike. One of the defining aspects of this pattern is the stark division that highlights the Sumi (black) markings, a trait that is unique to the Showa Sanshoku and Shiro Utsuri varieties. Ideally, Menware, manifests as a captivating zigzag pattern that elegantly stretches from the fish’s mouth to its shoulder, contributing significantly to the koi’s overall appearance, and imparting an impression of strength and vitality.
