What Does Motoguro Mean?

Motoguro which is pronounced MOH toh GOO roh, and means black fins. This term describes the black colour found at the shoulder joints of pectoral fins. A dark Sumi appears at the base of these fins. You can often see this in the Showa and Shiro Utsuri koi types. Sometimes, people might also use the term to talk about Sumi in the tail fin, but this is rare. Small amounts of Sumi at the fins’ connection to the body show the quality of the koi’s Sumi. If the Sumi looks uneven, like it was swept by a broom, it is a defect in Showa and Shiro Utsuri koi. High-quality Motoguro matters.
