What is A Aka Matsuba Koi?

All Matsuba koi come from the Asagi variety. Asagi koi have blue colouring and special reticulated scales. They also have a red (hi) pattern on their sides. In the late 1950s, breeders created the Aka Matsuba. They crossed a high-red Kohaku, which is mainly red with white spots, with a Hi Asagi. This Asagi variant has a stronger red colour. This breeding produced many fry with different patterns. Some had reticulated patterns, while others did not. The fry showed a range of colours, including blue, white, and red. Among the fry, there were a few that exhibited solely red coloration, which, with some selective refinement, would eventually evolve into the Aka Matsuba variety.
