When Do I Start To Feed My Koi In Spring?
If the water temperature in your pond is below 6° Celsius, your fish should be in a hibernation state. Even though you may have thrown in some food and they ate it, their bodies would not be able to digest it properly. This means the food could end up decaying inside your fish. Clearly, this is not something you want to occur. If they didn’t eat the food at all it would begin to decompose in your pond, which is also an undesirable situation.
As the weather starts to warm up, you might find yourself looking at nutritious options for your fish once more. Keep in mind that the cold temperatures still hinder the ability of your koi to absorb protein from their food. While wheatgerm food is low in protein it contains elevated levels of other essential nutrients that your Koi need to revive their energy.
When the water temperature stabilizes at around 8° Celsius, we recommend starting with a small amount of food for the koi. Make sure to remove any leftover food that hasn’t been consumed. Allow the koi to guide you; if they haven’t eaten the food within 5 minutes, be sure to take it out of the pond. We recommend using Aqua Source Koi Food
